Homemade Apple Pie Recipe
Pie Crust:
1 ¼ cup unsifted all-purpose flour (whole wheat flour
can be substituted)
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup shortening
½ teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoon ice cold water
Add salt and baking powder to flour, then cut in the shortening
with pastry blender until the size of small peas. Add 2 tablespoons
of ice cold water, 1 tbsp at a time, mixing with a fork. Press
dough into a ball cut in half (one half for bottom, and the
other for the top) on a lightly floured board roll out dough
to fit a 9” pie plate, allowing for overlap.
Filling
6 tart apples (peeled, cored and sliced)
½ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup light brown sugar
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ cup flour
Mix all dry ingredients together. Alternate apples and dry
mixture in 9” pie plate. Cover with pastry top and press
with overlap of bottom to seal the pie, glaze the top with
1 tablespoon milk and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake at 425° F for 13 minutes; then reduce heat to 350°F
and bake for an additional 25 minutes.
Homemade Apple Sauce
4-6 tart apples (peeled, cored and sliced)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon light brown sugar
¼ teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg
Place all ingredients in a medium sized sauce pan; heat over
medium low heat until apples soften. Mash with a potato masher
and continue cooking for 15-20 minutes.
